While we mark time each Sunday according to the Church Year, our Sunday morning services are occasionally marked by other special celebrations. In our regular worship services, we take time to celebrate new life among us as we dedicate babies and acknowledge their important role in the life of our family of faith, we ordain deacons and commission mission teams as we celebrate God's Spirit at work in our congregation, and though they actively participate in leadership throughout the year, we set aside Sundays when children and youth lead us as we worship together.
Throughout the year, our worship life is also enriched as we gather for special services of worship that take place on Sunday evenings, Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday and during Holy Week.
During the Sunday evenings of Advent, we gather for the lighting of our Chrismon Tree and are led in special services of music by our choral and handbell ensembles. Throughout Advent, we also hold weekly noonday services of communion. On Christmas Eve we gather with our families around the Lord's Table as we celebrate the coming of Christ.
Lent is a season that prepares us to enter into the celebration of Easter. We begin the season with the imposition of ashes during an evening service on Ash Wednesday. Weekly noonday communion services are held throughout the Lenten season.
During Holy Week, we gather for noonday services and lunch with other downtown Henderson churches as we mark the life of Christ on the final days leading to his crucifixion. Our own community gathers on the evening of Maundy Thursday for a service of darkness as we remember the betrayal of Christ and the last hours of his journey to the cross. In addition to those services that help us mark time with the Church, we gather twice a year with our sisters and brothers from Shiloh Baptist Church as we celebrate our historical connections and our present-day partnership in Christ's mission here in Henderson. |
